The school holidays are here, and with that will no doubt come the usual, 'I'm bored', 'I have nothing to do' or the classic, 'Are we there yet?'.

Give holiday boredom the boot, and turn your Flip Files into serious activity zones that will keep the kids engaged for hours. Simply add a cover to the front plastic pocket with the child's name on it, and then fill the pockets with games and activities your child will love.

Not sure where to start? Relax, we've got you covered! Here are our top ideas for Flip File holiday fun:

Make a DIY activity book

Find your favourite activities online and print these out on A4 sheets of paper. Then slide these pages into the pockets, filing up the book. You can group the pages together by activity in 'chapters' for kids to dip into as they wish, or mix things up and have different types of activities on every page so they can work their way through the book from front to back.

The DIY activity book is ideal for:

  • Colouring pages and colour by numbers
  • Word searches or crossword puzzles
  • Mazes
  • Jokes or riddles
  • Step-by-step drawing tutorials and paper craft

You can rotate the pages daily if you have a very busy little one, or weekly. You can also make up different books, like colouring pages only or paper craft only, and rotate these books throughout the day or holiday to maintain interest.

Create a boredom buster station

The border buster station is for those moments when kids have exhausted their usual go-to activities and are looking for something different to do.

To make it, label each pocket in your Flip File with a theme such as Quiet Time, Get Creative, Get Moving, Learn Something New, Make Something etc. Then fill the pockets with cards or pages outlining different ideas for that theme.

The kids can randomly choose a pocket or you can turn that into a game by numbering the pockets and letting them roll a die, with them then choosing the pocket with the corresponding number.

For physical activities like the obstacle course, add a timesheet to the pocket and let kids keep track of the time it takes them to complete the activity. Then each day they can try better their time!

Creative activities for the boredom buster station include:

  • Build a fort out of pillows
  • Write a comic strip
  • Do 20 jumping jacks
  • Learn a magic trick
  • The floor is lava
  • Complete an obstacle course
  • Make an airdry clay sculpture

Create a travel or restaurant pack

If you're going to be on the road for a while, or have planned a few nights out, keeping the kids occupied can be a real challenge. By using a Flip File to store all the kids' favourite puzzles, games and activities, you can keep everything in one place for easy access on the go.

If they enjoy drawing or colouring, include sheets of plain paper in one pocket and their colouring crayons, pencils or kokis in another. You can close the pocket at the top using large paperclips or foldback clips.

Fill your Flip File pockets with:

  • Puzzles
  • Trivia or trump cards
  • Sticker sheets
  • Printed game boards for snakes and ladders or ludo
  • Pens and paper for written games like noughts and crosses
  • Travel activity books

Memory saver file

Whether you're going away these holidays or staying home, time off is perfect for making memories with the kids - even if it's just doing activities like baking with them, enjoying movie night or having their friends over for playdates.

Take photos on your phone of the various things they get up to, print these out and then let them scrapbook their holiday memories.

Collect ticket stubs, wrappers, maps, wrist tags and even autumn leaves or wild flowers for pressing (if you're allowed to pick them - be aware of rules in some places against picking wild flowers), and include these with your kids' holiday snaps.

Allocate one pocket per day or outing of the holidays, and add dates at the top of the pocket. You can also let the kids do holiday cover pages to include inside your Flip File to separate this holiday from future ones, and keep your memory saver file for the winter, spring and summer holidays later in the year.

Holiday routine chart

When you're busy and the kids are bored, the days can seem eternally long!

Break it up a little with a fun visual schedule that sets out routines, chores and free time. For smaller kids, look for charts to print out with pictures to illustrate each activity on the chart, or cut these out and let them stick them onto the chart themselves.

Put one chart in each pocket of our Flip File, secure the chart in the pocket at the top of the sleeve with foldback clips, and let the kids use whiteboard markers to tick off what they've done for the day.

Examples of charts include:

  • Morning routine: Brush teeth, have breakfast, clean up room, make bed etc.
  • Chore chart: List the chores your child currently does or add age-appropriate holiday chores they can do - even if that's just helping you around the house
  • Free time: Watch a TV show, play a game, ride a bike, read a book, do something creative etc.
  • Evening routine: Help with dinner, eat, wind down time, brush teeth, storytime, bedtime.

Mini learning folder

While holidays are not strictly for learning, if you have curious kids who love to explore new subjects, or enjoy reading or doing challenging maths sums, then a learning-based Flip File is a great way to keep them occupied.

Add timesheets for brain teasers, quizzes and riddles where they can keep score of how quickly they solved each day's challenge, and try improve their times the next day.

Fill your file with:

  • Quick maths games
  • Sudoku
  • Quizzes
  • Word puzzles
  • Brain teasers and riddles
  • Fun fact sheets
  • Spelling games
  • 'Challenge of the Day' cards (a super tricky challenge that requires a little more time and effort to work out)

The ultimate family game file

No matter where you find yourself this holiday, at some point you'll want to get the whole family involved for some fun and games.

Flip Files make it super easy to take family favourite games along without have to cart the entire games cupboard with you.

Keep one pocket for new games, question and prompts, and the pocket immediately behind that for the ones you've already done to avoid mixing up the cards.

Get printed versions of simple games to keep in your file:

  • Battleships grids
  • Paper bingo
  • Printable card games
  • 'Would you rather?' questions
  • Charades prompts

Use Flip File these holidays to bust that boredom, keep the kids busy and have fun while doing it!
